Type Amharic on a PC

The fastest way to type Amharic on a Windows PC is in the browser, with nothing to download or configure:

1. Open the Mela Amharic keyboard.
2. Type with your regular keyboard, by sound: selam becomes ሰላም, buna becomes ቡና. Capital letters give the emphatic consonants (T for ጠ, C for ጨ, S for ጸ), and the on-screen grid shows the full mapping.
3. Press Copy, then paste into Word, Google Docs, Excel, email, or anywhere else. The text is standard Unicode, so any program with an Ethiopic font shows it correctly.

Mela also gives you what a plain letter-picker cannot: live word suggestions above the text box as you type, and optional autocorrect (ራስሰር አስገባ) that inserts the top suggestion when you end a word. It types like a phone keyboard, on your PC.

Do I need to download an Amharic keyboard for my PC?

No. There is no separate Mela download for Windows; the online keyboard is the PC version. Windows can be set up with an Ethiopic input method through its language settings, but that requires installing a language pack and switching input modes, and it has no Amharic word suggestions. The browser keyboard needs no setup at all, which also makes it the practical choice on a work machine, a shared computer, or an internet café PC where you cannot install anything.

Does it work in Word and Google Docs?

Yes. Type in Mela, copy, and paste. Windows ships with Ethiopic fonts (Nyala and Ebrima), so ፊደል renders correctly in Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Excel and every modern browser.
